33-year old switch hitting CF Carlos Beltran had knee surgery against team wishes late in the winter which caused him to miss most of this year. He has played in 43 games for the Mets and he is 31 of 142 (.218 avg, .660 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 2 homers, 14 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Beltran just doesn’t look anything like the player he was in his first five years with the Mets. Beltran played in 677 games in his first five years with the Mets and he was 720 of 2,560 (.281 avg) with 469 runs scored, 127 homers, 466 RBIs and 94 stolen bases.

The New York Mets deal Jeff Francoeur to the Rangers

The Mets have dealt 26-year old righty swinging outfielder Jeff Francoeur to the Rangers for 25-year old right swinging infielder Joaquin Arias. Francoeur played in 123 games for the Mets this year and he was 94 of 398 (.236 avg, .663 OPS) with 43 runs scored, 11 homers, 53 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. He played in 198 games in his two years with the Mets and he was 184 of 687 (.268 avg, .735 OPS) with 83 runs scored, 21 homers, 94 RBIs and 9 stolen bases. Joaquin Arias will immediately help out the Mets’ bench as he can handle 2B, SS and 3B defensively. Arias played in 50 games for the Rangers this year and he was 27 of 98 (.276 avg, .637 OPS) with 18 runs scored, 9 RBIs and 1 stolen base. He has now played in 91 games over parts of four years in the majors and he is 65 of 227 (.276 avg, .637 OPS) with 37 runs scored, 19 RBIs and 5 stolen bases.

Johan Santana is pitching well again for the New York Mets this year

31-year old lefty starting pitcher Johan Santana continues to be the ace the Mets’ front office thought he would be when they traded for him three years ago. He has started 27 games for the Mets this year and he is 10-8 with a 2.94 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP. Santana has now pitched in 86 games (all starts) in his three years with the Mets and he is 39-24 with a 2.83 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP. Santana’s record would even be better with more run support but at least he’s doing his part.

The New York Mets sign Yhency Brazoban

The Mets have signed 30-year old righty reliever Yhency Brazoban to a minor league deal. He pitched in 52 games (0 starts) in the Mexican League this year and he was 4-3 with 8 saves, a 2.22 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP. Brazoban whiffed 81 batters in only 73 innings in Mexico this year. He last pitched in the majors in 2008 with the Dodgers. He has pitched in 116 games (0 starts) in his major league career to date and he is 10-12 with 21 saves, a 4.70 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. Brazoban has already pitched in 4 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball for the Mets and he is 0-0 with 1 save, a 2.70 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP. If he pitches well the next couple of weeks the Mets will likely call him up when rosters expand on September 1st.

The New York Mets lose Rod Barajas on waivers to the Dodgers

The Mets have lost 34-year old righty swinging catcher Rod Barajas on waivers to the Dodgers. Barajas played in 74 games for the Mets this year and he was 56 of 249 (.225 avg, .677 OPS) with 30 runs scored, 12 homers and 34 RBIs. The Mets get relief from Barajas’ salary by letting him go like this plus it will give them an extended look at 23-year old lefty swinging Josh Thole as the starting catcher. Thole has played in 40 games for the Mets this year and he is 28 of 97 (.289 avg, .712 OPS) with 6 runs scored, 1 homer, 9 RBIs and 1 stolen base.

Luis Castillo doesn’t want to play for the New York Mets anymore

34-year old switch hitting 2B Luis Castillo said last week that there is no way he sees himself wearing a Mets’ uniform in 2010. That is probably quite allright for the Mets as Castillo looks like his career is nearing an end. Castillo has played in 66 games for the Mets this year and he is 49 of 204 (.240 avg, .617 OPS) with 20 runs scored, 0 homers, 15 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. In his four years with the Mets, Castillo has played in 345 games in which he is 328 of 1,187 (.276 avg, .696 OPS) with 180 runs scored, 5 homers, 103 RBIs and 54 stolen bases.

The New York Mets lose Francisco Rodriguez for the rest of the season

28-year old closer Francisco Rodriguez will miss the rest of the season as he needs surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb. Rodriguez hurt his thumb while punching his girlfriend’s father after a Mets’ game. K-Rod pitched in 53 games (0 starts) for the Mets this year and he was 4-2 with 25 saves, a 2.20 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP. He whiffed 67 batters and only allowed 45 hits in 57 1/3 innings this year. The Mets will likely go with a trio of pitchers to replace K-Rod as the closer depending on matchups. 35-year old lefty Hisanori Takahashi got his first major league save last night. He has pitched in 35 games (12 starts) for the Mets this year and he is 7-6 with 1 save, a 4.16 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. He is the one guy of this trio who can get out batters from both sides of the plate. 33-year old lefty Pedro Feliciano is pretty tough on lefties. He has pitched in 65 games (0 starts) this year for the Mets and he is 3-6 with a 3.05 ERA and a 1.74 WHIP. The lone righty of the bunch is 25-year old Bobby Parnell. Parnell has pitched in 25 games (0 starts) for the Mets this year and he is 0-1 with a 3.68 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP. The Mets will definitely miss K-Rod the rest of the year.

Oliver Perez has been awful for the New York Mets

The Mets should just release 28-year old lefty pitcher Oliver Perez and eat the rest of the money owed to him. Perez has pitched in 14 games (7 starts) for the Mets this year and he is 0-4 with a 6.70 ERA and a 2.02 WHIP. He has given up 50 hits (8 homers) and he has walked 37 batters in only 43 innings this season. Perez is refusing any attempt by the Mets to send him to the minors. He has now pitched in 98 games (91 starts) in his five years with the Mets and he is 29-28 with a 4.69 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP. The Mets should bit the bullet and cut Perez as he is taking up a roster spot.

The New York Mets release Alex Cora

The Mets have released 34-year old lefty swinging infielder Alex Cora. Cora played in 62 games for the Mets this year and he was 35 of 169 (.207 avg, .543 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 20 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. The Mets have recalled 20-year old righty swinging infielder Ruben Tejada to replace Cora on the roster. Tejada played in 35 games earlier this year for the Mets and he was 22 of 104 (.212 avg, .547 OPS) with 17 runs scored, 5 RBIs and 1 stolen base. The Mets won’t miss Cora too much as there is no reason to think that Tejada can’t play just as well or better.

The New York Mets are glad that David Wright’s power has returned

27-year old starting 3B David Wright had a power outage in 2009. He played in 144 games in 2009 for the Mets and he was 164 of 535 (.307 avg, .837 OPS) with 88 runs scored, 10 homers, 72 RBIs and 27 stolen bases. This season though, Wright has his power stroke back. Wright has played in 106 games for the Mets this year and he is 118 of 399 (.296 avg, .873 OPS) with 57 runs scored, 17 homers, 77 RBIs and 15 stolen bases. Wright getting his power back is one of the main reasons the Mets have played better than most experts thought they would.
