23-year old righty starting pitcher Kevin Mulvey was the #4 prospect in the Mets’ minor league system coming into this season according to Baseball America. He’s almost ready as he is pitching pretty well in AAA ball this season. He has started 18 games in AAA this year and he is 3-8 with a 3.84 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP. Mulvey is pitching much better than his record shows and the Mets will have to consider calling him up if they suffer any more injuries in the rotation.

The New York Mets designate Chris Aguila for assignment

The Mets have designated outfielder Chris Aguila for assignment. Aguila played in 8 games for the Mets this season and he was 2 for 12 (.167 avg, .453 OPS). The Mets have recalled 32-year old righty swinging catcher Robinson Cancel from the minors to replace Aguila on the roster. Cancel played in 4 games earlier this season with the Mets and he was 1 for 4 (.250 avg, .500 OPS) with 2 RBIs. Cancel has also played in 16 games in A+AAA ball this season and he is 19 for 59 (.322 avg, .834 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 1 homer, 8 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.

Moises Alou is done for the season for the New York Mets

Moises Alou will have season ending surgery on a torn left hamstring. Alou has played in 15 games this season for the Mets and he is 17 for 49 (.347 avg, .777 OPS) with 4 runs scored and 9 RBIs. The Mets were hoping to get Alou back sometime this month but it won’t happen. When you couple Alou and Ryan Church’s injuries you have to think that the Mets will be in the trade market for two outfielders at the trading deadline if not before.

The Mets have placed righty Tony Armas on the 15-day disabled list with a strained abdominal muscle. Armas has pitched in 3 games (1 start) for the Mets this season and he is 1-0 with a 7.56 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP. The Mets have recalled righty reliever Carlos Muniz to replace Armas on the pitching staff. Muniz has pitched in 10 games (0 starts) for the Mets this season and he is 0-1 with a 5.54 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP.

Salvador Aguilar is pitching well in AA for the New York Mets

If Salvador Aguilar keeps pitching like he is so far in AA ball the Mets might consider giving him a chance at the big league level. Aguilar is a 26-year old righty swingman who can relieve or start. He has pitched in 22 games (12 starts) in AA ball this season and he is 10-2 with a 2.84 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. It will be interesting to see if Aguilar gets a shot if he keeps pitching well with the Mets.

The Mets have placed starting RF Ryan Church on the 15-day disabled list and his year could be in jeopardy due to post concussion syndrome. Church has played in 57 games for the Mets this season and he is 63 for 205 (.307 avg, .882 OPS) with 40 runs scored, 10 homers and 36 RBIs. The Mets brought Church back too fast as they were desperate to help the offense without giving anything up from the farm system. It looks like they might have made a big mistake. The Mets should be in the market for at least 1 starting outfielder in the next couple of weeks.

Pedro Martinez has certainly lost his once dominant fastball and it’s hurting him big time as his secondary pitches are not good enough for him to succeed without the heater. Martinez has started 7 games this season for the Mets and he is 2-2 with a 7.39 ERA and a 1.73 WHIP. The Mets don’t really have anyone ready to replace Martinez in the rotation so they will just have to cross their fingers and hope he gets better soon.

Andy Phillips is already gone before he had a chance to show what he could do. Phillips played in 4 games for the Mets this season and he was 1 for 5 (.200 avg) with 1 run scored. The Mets won’t miss Phillips one bit as they have a lot of better players than him already on the bench.

Damion Easley will replace Castillo as the starting 2B and he should provide more thump with the bat. Easley has played in 56 games for the Mets this season and he is 39 for 144 (.271 avg, .689 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 2 homers and 18 RBIs. The Mets have recalled 25-year old switch-hitting Argenis Reyes to back up Easley at 2B. Reyes has played in 79 games in AAA ball this season for the Mets and he is 87 for 300 (.290 avg, .686 OPS) with 38 runs scored, 22 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.

The Mets have activated Ryan Church off the D.L. to replace Nixon on the roster and this should give the Mets’ offense a nice boost.
