The New York Mets are off to a lousy start to 2010

The New York Mets are in last place in the N.L. East with a 2-4 record despite outscoring their opponents 27-22. The Mets have had a lot of bad luck so far as they should have won at the very least one more game this season. They will have a tough time righting the ship as they have to play 3 games this week in Colorado and 3 games this weekend in St. Louis. The Mets would likely be very happy if they can go 3-3 this week against the two teams they are playing.

The New York Mets are off to a so-so start

The Mets are 2-2 to start the 2010 season despite outscoring the competition 22-13. The Mets should probably be 3-1 right now but they lost a game against the Marlins that they probably should have won but that kind of thing happens a lot in MLB. Overall the Mets have to be pleased with the fact that they are averaging 5.5 runs per game without Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes or Daniel Murphy. The pitching has also been pretty solid for the Mets. If they keep hitting and pitching like they are right now they will win a lot more games than anyone expected before the year started.

The New York Mets are choking down the stretch

The Mets have lost 10 of their last 14 games and all of there last 7 games at home! The bad thing for the Mets is they are at home this weekend for the Marlins. So the Mets are now tied with the Phillies at 87-72 and they are 1 game behind the Padres for the Wild Card. You can’t blame Moises Alou for this mess as he is 42 for his last 104 (.404 avg, 1.051 OPS) with 20 runs scored, 4 homers and 16 RBIs. David Wright has also been outstanding in his last 27 games as he is 38 for 106 (.358 avg, 1.095 OPS) with 21 runs scored, 7 homers and 19 RBIs.

Two veteran starting pitchers giving the Mets strong work down the stretch

Pedro Martinez and Tom Glavine are both rolling late in the season as they try to help the Mets with the National League East. The Mets are currently 83-67 which has them in first place in the National League East, 1.5 games ahead of the Phillies. The Mets are also 3 games better than the Padres who are leading the Wild Card Race in the National League. The Mets have lost 5 games in a row and they need their veteran starting pitchers to get them to the finish line. Martinez has looked pretty sharp in his first three starts of the season. He is 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP so far this season. In 16 innings he has allowed 18 hits, walked 4 batters and whiffed 17. Lefty Tom Glavine has been hot in the 2nd half of the season as he is 6-0 with a 3.15 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP in 12 starts. Glavine has been defying his age all season long as he is 13-6 with a 3.88 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP in 31 starts this season.

The New York Mets can see the finish line

The New York Mets can see the finish line as they have won 8 of their last 10 games. The Mets are now 82-62 which has them 6 games ahead of the 2nd place Phillies. The Mets need to stay focused until they clinch and then they need to give some of their regulars a few days off to rest up for the playoffs.
