The New York Mets are choking down the stretch

The Mets have lost 10 of their last 14 games and all of there last 7 games at home! The bad thing for the Mets is they are at home this weekend for the Marlins. So the Mets are now tied with the Phillies at 87-72 and they are 1 game behind the Padres for the Wild Card. You can’t blame Moises Alou for this mess as he is 42 for his last 104 (.404 avg, 1.051 OPS) with 20 runs scored, 4 homers and 16 RBIs. David Wright has also been outstanding in his last 27 games as he is 38 for 106 (.358 avg, 1.095 OPS) with 21 runs scored, 7 homers and 19 RBIs.

Two veteran starting pitchers giving the Mets strong work down the stretch

Pedro Martinez and Tom Glavine are both rolling late in the season as they try to help the Mets with the National League East. The Mets are currently 83-67 which has them in first place in the National League East, 1.5 games ahead of the Phillies. The Mets are also 3 games better than the Padres who are leading the Wild Card Race in the National League. The Mets have lost 5 games in a row and they need their veteran starting pitchers to get them to the finish line. Martinez has looked pretty sharp in his first three starts of the season. He is 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP so far this season. In 16 innings he has allowed 18 hits, walked 4 batters and whiffed 17. Lefty Tom Glavine has been hot in the 2nd half of the season as he is 6-0 with a 3.15 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP in 12 starts. Glavine has been defying his age all season long as he is 13-6 with a 3.88 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP in 31 starts this season.

The New York Mets can see the finish line as they have won 8 of their last 10 games. The Mets are now 82-62 which has them 6 games ahead of the 2nd place Phillies. The Mets need to stay focused until they clinch and then they need to give some of their regulars a few days off to rest up for the playoffs.

The New York Mets are building a lead in the East

The Mets have rebounded from a rough series with the Phillies as they have expanded their lead in the National League East to 5 games. The Mets are currently 77-60 on the season. Jose Reyes is the guy that makes the Mets’ offense go as the leadoff hitter. He is hitting .295 with 103 runs scored, 10 homers, 49 RBIs and 74 stolen bases so far this season. As impressive as Reyes’ numbers are…..David Wright’s are even better. Wright is hitting .320 with 94 runs scored, 26 homers, 91 RBIs and 30 stolen bases. Outfielder Carlos Beltran has missed part of the season to injury but you wouldn’t know that by looking at the numbers that he has put up this year. Beltran is hitting .281 with 75 runs scored, 26 homers, 87 RBIs and 20 stolen bases. The Mets have gotten a lot of good work from their starting rotation this season which was projected to be a weakness. Tom Glavine keeps rolling along despite his advancing age as he is 12-6 with a 4.06 ERA so far this season. John Maine is also having a good year in his first full season in the majors as he is 14-8 with a 3.57 ERA. The Mets have fixed the mechanics of lefty Oliver Perez and he’s paid them back with a 12-9 record and a 3.39 ERA.Â

The New York Mets are on a cold streak

The Mets are 4-8 the last two weeks as they’ve been outscored 56-42 by their opponents. The Mets have coupled poor hitting with sub par pitching and they need to turn things around soon. The Mets enter this week with a 36-25 record which has them in first place in the National League East, 2.5 games ahead of the Braves.
