Billy Wagner has been awesome for the New York Mets this season

Closer Billy Wagner has been like a man on a mission this season as he has not allowed a run this season. He has pitched in 17 games (0 starts) for the Mets this season and he is 0-0 with 9 saves, a 0.00 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP. Wagner has whiffed 20 batters in only 18 innings this season which shows that he is still bringing the heat. If you want to beat the Mets you better be winning the game going into the 9th inning or you are done.

Billy Wagner has been filthy so far for the New York Mets in 2008

Lefty stopper Billy Wagner has been downright nasty so far this season. He has pitched in 12 games so far this season and he is 0-0 with 7 saves, a 0.00 ERA and a 0.38 WHIP. In 13 innings this season, Wagner has allowed 3 hits, walked 2 batters and whiffed 13. Wagner is showing absolutely no signs of age as he keeps throwing seeds which is good for the Mets who have been having troubles scoring runs.

Did the New York Mets overpay for Pedro Martinez and Tom Glavine?

The Mets threw a lot of money at Tom Glavine 5 years ago and he’s decided to turn down his team option for 2008. Glavine never was the ace the Mets wanted him to be as he turned into a solid #3 or #4 type pitcher despite earning like a #1. Glavine started 164 games for the Mets in his career and he was 61-56 with a 3.97 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. He tossed 1005.1 innings for the Mets and he allowed 1,057 hits, walked 323 batters and whiffed 516. Pedro Martinez had a really good first season with the Mets but he’s been injured the last two seasons. Martinez has started only 59 games in his three seasons with the Mets and he’s 27-17 with a 3.38 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP. He has tossed 377.2 innings for the Mets and he has allowed only 300 hits while walking 93 and whiffing 377. I think it was a mistake to give Glavine the big bucks but Martinez has been a #1 type pitcher when healthy so it’s hard to argue that he was a mistake.

Two veteran starting pitchers giving the Mets strong work down the stretch

Pedro Martinez and Tom Glavine are both rolling late in the season as they try to help the Mets with the National League East. The Mets are currently 83-67 which has them in first place in the National League East, 1.5 games ahead of the Phillies. The Mets are also 3 games better than the Padres who are leading the Wild Card Race in the National League. The Mets have lost 5 games in a row and they need their veteran starting pitchers to get them to the finish line. Martinez has looked pretty sharp in his first three starts of the season. He is 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP so far this season. In 16 innings he has allowed 18 hits, walked 4 batters and whiffed 17. Lefty Tom Glavine has been hot in the 2nd half of the season as he is 6-0 with a 3.15 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP in 12 starts. Glavine has been defying his age all season long as he is 13-6 with a 3.88 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP in 31 starts this season.

The Mets have a few pitchers that are going really good

Billy Wagner has been the best pitcher on the Mets which should come as no surprise. He is 1-0 with 17 saves, a 1.64 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP this season. He has whiffed 51 batters and only has allowed 25 hits in 38.1 innings which shows how great his arm still is. John Maine has stepped up and become the ace of the Mets starting staff. Maine is 10-4 with a 2.71 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP this season. If he can keep it up he could be a darkhorse for the N.L. Cy Young Award. Oliver Perez has also been outstanding this season as he been throwing more strikes and letting his great stuff work for him. Perez is 7-6 with a 3.14 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP so far this season. Lefty reliever Pedro Feliciano (1-1, 1 SV, 2.51 ERA, 1.14 WHIP) and rookie Joe Smith (2-0, 2.75 ERA, 1.36 WHIP) have both been good in the first half and the Mets need them to keep up the good work.
