27-year old lefty reliever Daniel Herrera will miss the rest of the 2012 season as he needs Tommy John Surgery. Herrera pitched in 3 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball this year for the Mets and he was 0-0 with 1 save, a 1.50 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. He pitched in 16 games (0 starts) for the Mets last year in his first season with the team and he was 0-1 with a 1.13 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP. Herrera has now pitched in 131 games (0 starts) and he is 5-8 with a 3.72 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP. This is a bad break for Herrera and the Mets, as he was likely going to get a chance to pitch for them at some point in 2012.

The New York Mets are going to be without David Wright for a while

The Mets are going to have to play without starting 3B David Wright for a while as he has a small fracture on his right pinkie. The good news is that he won’t require surgery to fix it. He is still listed as out indefinitely. Wright has played in 4 games for the Mets so far this year and he is 7 for 12 (.583 avg, 1.480 OPS) with 1 run scored, 1 homer and 4 RBIs. Opposing pitchers are worried about Wright once again as he has already walked 4 times while only whiffing 1 time this year. Ronny Cedeno will likely be Wright’s replacement for the time being. He has played in 4 games for the Mets so far this year and he is 3 for 4 (.750 avg, 1.750 OPS) with 1 double and 1 RBI. The Mets hope that Wright heals up soon because he’s almost impossible to replace because of his bat.

The Mets have placed 34-year old switch-hitting, starting CF Andres Torres on the 15-day disabled list due to a left calf strain. Torres was injured in the 2012 season opener against the Cubs. He was 0 for 2 with a walk and a run scored. The Mets have recalled 24-year old lefty swinging outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis to replace Torres on the active roster. He played in 53 games in AAA-ball last year and he was 56 of 188 (.298 avg, .908 OPS) with 33 runs scored, 6 homers, 14 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. Nieuwenhuis will likely share CF with righty swinging Scott Hairston until Torres is ready to return to action.

The Mets have placed 34-year old righty reliever D.J. Carrasco on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 26th due to a sprained right ankle. Carrasco pitched in 42 games (1 start) for the Mets last year and he was 1-3 with a 6.02 ERA and a 1.68 WHIP. He has now pitched in 286 games (24 starts) in his first seven years in the majors and he is 24-21 with 2 saves, a 4.48 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP. Carrasco was pretty awful last year, so the Mets are going to give him all the time he needs to heal up.

The Mets have placed 25-year old righty reliever Pedro Beato on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 26th due to right shoulder tightness. Beato pitched in 60 games (0 starts) for the Mets last year and he was 2-1 with a 4.30 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP. Beato only gave up 59 hits in 67 innings as a rookie last year. Beato proved himself last year as a Rule 5 Draft Pick, and he likely has a bright future for the Mets.
