The New York Mets sign 2B/OF Bobby Scales

The Mets have signed 34-year old switch-hitting 2B/OF Bobby Scales to a minor league deal. Scales played in 148 games in AAA+Japan last year and he was 145 of 517 (.280 avg, .830 OPS) with 82 runs scored, 18 homers, 73 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. He last played in the majors back in 2010 with the Cubs. Scales has played in 61 games in his first two years in the majors and he is 34 of 137 (.248 avg, .743 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 3 homers, 17 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Scales could help the Mets at some point in 2012 if he plays well in AAA.

The New York Mets sign Josh Rodriguez

The Mets have signed 27-year old righty swinging 2B/SS Josh Rodriguez to a minor league deal. Rodriguez played in 7 games for the Pirates last year in his first taste of the majors and he was 1 for 12 (.083 avg, .298 OPS) with 1 run scored and 1 RBI. He also played in 81 games in AA+AAA-ball last year in which he was 76 of 295 (.258 avg, .672 OPS) with 33 runs scored, 7 homers, 30 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. He will likely start the 2012 season in AAA-ball, but he might be able to help the Mets at some point in the year.

The New York Mets re-sign Chris Young

The Mets have re-signed 32-year old righty starting pitcher Chris Young to a minor league deal. Young pitched in 4 games (all starts) for the Mets last year and he was 1-0 with a 1.88 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP. He has now pitched in 139 games (all starts) in his first 8 years in the majors and he is 49-34 with a 3.74 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. Young is likely going to have to make a couple of starts in the minors before he’s ready to go in 2012.

The New York Mets release Tobi Stoner

The Mets have released 27-year old righty starter/reliever Tobi Stoner. Stoner pitched in 21 games (19 starts) in A+AA-ball last year and he was 5-7 with a 6.05 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP. He pitched in 5 games (0 starts) in parts of two years with the Mets and he was 0-1 with a 3.97 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP. The Mets won’t miss Stoner one bit as he regressed big time in the minors last year.

The New York Mets sign SS/2B Oswaldo Navarro

The Mets have signed 27-year old righty swinging 2B/SS Oswaldo Navarro to a minor league deal. Navarro played in 107 games in AAA-ball last year and he was 84 of 315 (.267 avg, .681 OPS) with 28 runs scored, 2 homers, 31 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. He last played in the majors back in 2010 with the Houston Astros. He has played in 18 games in his first two years in the majors and he is 3 for 23 (.130 avg, .416 OPS) with 2 runs scored. He will likely start the 2012 season in AAA-ball for the Mets.
