30-year old switch-hitting CF Angel Pagan looked like he was sleepwalking in the first four months of the 2011 season. But, he woke up big time in August for the Mets. He has played in 23 games for the Mets so far in August and he is 34 for 99 (.343 avg, .884 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 3 homers, 9 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. Pagan has now played in 101 games overall this year and he is 104 for 396 (.263 avg, .702 OPS) with 55 runs scored, 7 homers, 47 RBIs and 27 stolen bases. Pagan will likely have to finish the season strongly if he’s going to want to remain a starter for the Mets in 2012.

38-year old righty reliever Jason Isringhausen looks like he’s starting to run out of gas. In 7 games so far in August, Isringhausen is 1-3 with 2 saves, a 15.00 ERA and a 2.50 WHIP. On a positive note, he did get his 300th save of his major league career this month. He has now pitched in 49 games (0 starts) for the Mets so far this year and he is 3-3 with 7 saves, a 4.43 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP. The Mets probably wish now that they dealt Isringhausen at the trade deadline on July 31st.

He has given up 178 hits in his first 157 1/3 innings this year as he hasn’t been missing many bats. But, he has limited the damage by walking 44 batters and whiffing 138 batters this year. The Mets hope that Niese can return to the rotation in a couple of weeks, to help them finish out this year.

32-year old righty swinging LF Jason Bay continues to be a bust for the Mets. He has played in 17 games so far in August and he is 16 for 66 (.242 avg, .739 OPS) with 12 runs scored, 3 homers, 7 RBIs and 1 stolen base. So Bay is showing some signs of life with the bat this month for the Mets. Bay has played in 97 games so far this year and he is 86 for 360 (.239 avg, .670 OPS) with 48 runs scored, 9 homers, 43 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. Bay has now played in 192 games in his first two years with the Mets and he is 176 of 708 (.249 avg, .709 OPS) with 96 runs scored, 15 homers, 90 RBIs and 20 stolen bases. The Mets need Bay to live up to his paycheck at some time in the very near future as he has not been too good for them yet, despite being paid very well.
