The New York Mets sign Travis Blackley
The Mets have signed 27-year old lefty starter/reliever Travis Blackley to a minor league deal. He pitched in 38 games (12 starts) in AAA-ball last season and he was 4-7 with 3 saves, a 4.85 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP. Blackley last pitched in the majors 2007 with the Giants. He has pitched in 8 games (all starts) in his major league career and he is 1-3 with a 9.35 ERA and a 2.08 WHIP. Blackley has allowed 45 hits in 34 2/3 innings in the majors and he has walked 27 batters which helps explain his problems. Don’t expect much out of him.
ISN’T BLACKLEY THE GUY THAT PITCHED TODAY FOR MEXICO AGAINST PUERTO RICO WITH STARTING PITCHER FOR P.R., BILL PULSIPHER?
IF THIS IS BLACKLEY, HE GAVE UP 3 RUNS BEFORE RECORDING ONE SINGLE OUT TODAY. ANOTHER WINNER OF A SIGNING OMAR!
It is the same guy Gary. I think he was signed more of as organizational depth anyway. I would be surprised and actually shocked if he pitched for the Mets in 2010.
You guys are a tough crowd. I have seen this guy been lights out. He may not start the season in the bigs, but would be a welcome addition during the season to cover injuries.
When did you see him pitch Ghost? Was he is A-ball then?
This would also be the same Blackley that gave up only one run in 5 2/3 innings when pitching for Australia against a very power Cuban team at the World Baseball Classic last year so he might have a bit of talent.
We will see Clint. I don’t put much stock in the World Baseball Classic. I do put stock in major and minor league numbers and Blackley hasn’t shown much at either level in his career to date.
Two outings thus far for a 0.00 ERA. He belongs at the Majors level and if not will be a great addition to the Mets AAA affiliate either in the pen or the rotation.
Brett,
It’s spring training. I wouldn’t get too excited about him quite yet.
