The Mets have designated 38-year old righty reliever Elmer Dessens for assignment. He pitched in 9 games (0 start) for the Mets this season and he is 0-0 with a 3.65 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. Dessens was really effective in AAA-ball this season working in 27 games (0 starts) in which he was 3-2 with 11 saves, a 2.31 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. It will be interesting to see if Dessens accepts an assignment to AAA or if he decides to become a free agent.

Alex Cora is having a rough season for the New York Mets

Veteran utilityman Alex Cora is proving that his best days are behind him. He has played in 69 games for the Mets this season and he is 52 for 219 (.237 avg, .602 OPS) with 23 runs scored, 12 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. The Mets really needed Cora to step up with Jose Reyes down to injury but it just hasn’t happened to this point. Even though this is a lost season for the Mets due to widespread injuries they should still consider making a move for a shortstop as it’s getting hard to watch Cora play out there.

The Mets have signed 32-year old lefty Adam Pettyjohn to a minor league deal. Pettyjohn has pitched in 18 games (6 starts) in AAA-ball this season and he was 1-6 with a 4.68 ERA and a 1.76 WHIP. Pettyjohn has also pitched in 19 games (10 starts) in his major league career and he is 1-7 with a 6.65 ERA and a 1.67 WHIP. Hopefully the Mets never need to call on Pettyjohn or they will be in deep trouble.

The Mets have released 33-year old righty starting pitcher Brandon Knight. Knight pitched in 20 games (14 starts) in AAA-ball this season and he was 4-9 with 3 saves, a 5.06 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP. The Mets let Knight go so that he could play in Korea. The Koreans hope he’s better there than he was in the majors where he pitched in 15 games (2 starts) and was 1-0 with a 8.62 ERA and a 1.85 WHIP. The Mets essentially did Knight a favor here.
