The Mets have exercised 36-year old lefty swinging Carlos Delgado’s option for the 2009 season valued at $12 million bucks. Delgado earned the money with the season he turned in last year for the Mets. Delgado played in 159 games for the Mets in 2008 and he was 162 for 598 (.271 avg, .871 OPS) with 96 runs scored, 38 homers and 115 RBIs. Delgado has now played three years with the Mets covering 442 games in which he is 440 for 1,660 (.265 avg) with 256 runs scored, 100 homers and 316 RBIs. Look for Delgado to have another outstanding season in 2009 for the Mets.

The New York Mets re-sign Fernando Tatis

The Mets have re-signed 33-year old righty swinging 3B/OF Fernando Tatis to a 1-year, $1.17 million dollar contract. He played in 92 games for the Mets in 2008 and he was 81 for 273 (.297 avg, .853 OPS) with 33 runs scored, 11 homers and 47 RBIs. Tatis just needed a chance to show what he could do and he rewarded the Mets for giving it to him. Tatis has now played in 783 games in his major league career and he is 699 for 2,646 (.264 avg, .791 OPS) with 379 runs scored, 103 homers, 394 RBIs and 46 stolen bases. This was a good and relatively cheap move for the Mets as Tatis really played well for them in 2008.

The New York Mets outright three players to AAA

The Mets have outrighted Nelson Figueroa, Adam Bostick and Gustavo Molina to AAA making them all free agents. 34-year old righty pitcher Nelson Figueroa is the best player of this bunch and that’s not saying too much. He pitched in 16 games (6 starts) for the Mets last season and he was 3-3 with a 4.57 ERA and a 1.63 WHIP. He has now pitched in 90 games (39 starts) in his major league career and he is 10-20 with a 4.64 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. 25-year old lefty Adam Bostick never was good enough to earn a promotion to the Mets. He pitched in 11 games (10 starts) last season in AAA and he was 2-2 with a 6.04 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP. 26-year old righty swinging catcher Gustavo Molina played in 2 games for the Mets last season and he was 1 for 7 (.143 avg, .393 OPS). Molina has now played in 19 games in his major league career and he is 4 for 34 (.118 avg, .309 OPS) with 1 run scored and 1 RBI. The Mets won’t miss any of these stiffs.

UPDATE: I must have been wrong about these guys as the Mets have re-signed Nelson Figueroa and Adam Bostick to minor league deals.
