The Mets can’t afford this injury as Wagner is nails at the end of the game as the closer. He will miss the next two weeks due to a strained left forearm. Wagner has pitched in 45 games (0 starts) for the Mets this season and he is 0-1 with 27 saves, a 2.30 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP. Wagner has only allowed 32 hits in 47 innings this season and he has whiffed 52 batters which shows how effective he has been. The Mets will replace Wagner as the closer with righty Aaron Heilman. Heilman has pitched in 59 games (0 starts) for the Mets this season and he is 1-6 with a 5.67 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP. This could be very shaky for the Mets as Heilman has allowed 9 homers and he has walked 28 batters in 60.1 innings. He does, however, have 67 strikeouts this season so he might do a decent job. We will see soon enough but the Mets need him to do a good job while Wagner is out. The Mets have recalled 28-year old righty reliever Ruddy Lugo to replace Wagner in the bullpen. He will likely serve the role as the long man in the pen as he has been starting in the minors. Lugo has pitched in 21 games (all starts) in AAA ball this season and he is 7-10 with a 5.09 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. Lugo has pitched in 102 games (0 starts) in his major league career and he is 8-4 with a 4.39 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP. The Mets will miss Wagner who is one of the best closers in all of baseball and they better hope Heilman does a good job because they can’t afford to lose any games late because they are behind both the Phillies and the Marlins in the division.
