The New York Mets sign Claudio Vargas
The Mets have signed righty starter Claudio Vargas to a minor league contract. The 29-year old righty pitched in 29 games (23 starts) for the Brewers last season and he was 11-6 with 1 save, a 5.09 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP. Vargas has now pitched in 153 games (110 starts) in his major league career and he is 43-38 with 1 save, a 4.95 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP. He will likely tune up in the minors before getting called up soon to help the Mets rotation which is hurting due to injuries.
This was a nice signing for the Mets. I didn’t think the Brewers should have let Vargas go, and now they probably miss him more with Capuano for the season.
New York might have to rely on Vargas for several starts during the first half of the season without Pedro, mainly depending on how Pelfrey holds up.
