The Mets have signed reliever Matt Wise to a 1-year, $1.2 million dollar contract. The 32-year old righty pitched in 56 games for the Brewers last season and he was 3-2 with 1 save, a 4.19 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. He has now pitched in 201 games (18 starts) in his major league career and he is 17-21 with 2 saves, a 4.18 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP. This was a good signing for the Mets as Wise will likely pitch well as one of the first relievers in the game next season.

The New York Mets let three players go

The Mets have decided not to tender new contracts to Johnny Estrada, Ben Johnson or Juan Padilla making them all free agents. Estrada was made expendable after Brian Schneider was acquired in a trade with the Nationals. He has played in 589 games in his major league career and he is 567 for 2,026 (.280 avg, .726 OPS) with 198 runs scored, 42 homers and 181 RBIs. Outfielder Ben Johnson only played in 9 games for the Mets last season and he was 5 for 27 (.185 avg, .455 OPS) with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI. Johnson has now played in 98 games in his major league career and he is 51 for 222 (.230 avg, .727 OPS) with 31 runs scored, 7 homers and 26 RBIs. Righty reliever Juan Padilla last pitched in the majors in 2005 for the Mets. He has pitched in 42 games in his major league career and he is 4-1 with 1 save, a 4.07 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP. Padilla has the largest upside of this bunch but he’s always hurt. Estrada will land on his feet because he’s been a solid major league player for a while now.
