The New York Mets re-sign Damion Easley

The Mets have re-signed super utility man Damion Easley to a 1-year, $950,000 dollar contract. That’s a bargain for a player of Easley’s skill set. He can play every position on the field except catcher and probably center field and he can hit. Easley played in 76 games last season for the Mets and he was 54 for 193 (.280 avg, .824 OPS) with 24 runs scored, 10 homers and 26 RBIs.

Did the New York Mets overpay for Pedro Martinez and Tom Glavine?

The Mets threw a lot of money at Tom Glavine 5 years ago and he’s decided to turn down his team option for 2008. Glavine never was the ace the Mets wanted him to be as he turned into a solid #3 or #4 type pitcher despite earning like a #1. Glavine started 164 games for the Mets in his career and he was 61-56 with a 3.97 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. He tossed 1005.1 innings for the Mets and he allowed 1,057 hits, walked 323 batters and whiffed 516. Pedro Martinez had a really good first season with the Mets but he’s been injured the last two seasons. Martinez has started only 59 games in his three seasons with the Mets and he’s 27-17 with a 3.38 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP. He has tossed 377.2 innings for the Mets and he has allowed only 300 hits while walking 93 and whiffing 377. I think it was a mistake to give Glavine the big bucks but Martinez has been a #1 type pitcher when healthy so it’s hard to argue that he was a mistake.
