Carlos Gomez has done a good job for the New York Mets so far

With the injuries to Shawn Green, Moises Alou and Endy Chavez the Mets had to dig pretty deep in their farm system to replace them. They chose 21 year old Carlos Gomez and he’s done a good job for them so far this season. Gomez has played in 28 games so far this season and he’s 19 for 71 (.268 avg, .627 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 1 homer, 10 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. Gomez would be even better if he were just a little more patient at the plate as he’s only walked 2 times so far.Â

David Wright is on fire for the New York Mets

David Wright is on fire over his last 7 games. In those games, Wright is 9 for 27 (.333 avg, 1.271 OPS) with 6 runs scored, 4 homers, 7 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Wright’s season average has improved to .279 and his OPS is now .878. Look for Wright to continue his recent power display as he’s too good of a hitter to play like he did in the first month of the season.

The New York Mets are on a cold streak

The Mets are 4-8 the last two weeks as they’ve been outscored 56-42 by their opponents. The Mets have coupled poor hitting with sub par pitching and they need to turn things around soon. The Mets enter this week with a 36-25 record which has them in first place in the National League East, 2.5 games ahead of the Braves.

The Mets have placed Endy Chavez on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring. In 47 games with the Mets, Chavez is 33 for 113 (.292 avg, .743 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 1 homer, 13 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. The Mets have activated Jose Valentin from the DL to replace Chavez on the roster. Valentin has played in 20 games this season for the Mets and he’s 19 for 68 (.279 avg, .830 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 2 homers and 13 RBIs.

The New York Mets’ starting rotation has been outstanding so far this season

Many experts projected that the Mets biggest weakness was going to be their starting rotation but it has acutally been a surprising strength of the team. The rotation has a little bit of everything as they have two lefties and three righties and two veterans and three young guys. First the old guys, as Orlando Hernandez and Tom Glavine continue to defy age. “El Duque” has had some injury problems but he’s been awesome when he has been healthy. He is 3-1 with a 2.20 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP so far this season. Tom Glavine is closing in on 300 wins as he now sits at 295 in his career. He has pitched well this season as he’s 5-3 with a 3.44 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP so far this season. John Maine was acquired by the Mets a couple of seasons ago from the Orioles and he has been outstanding for them. He is 6-3 with a 2.81 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP so far this season and I think he can keep this up. Omar Minaya stole lefty Oliver Perez from the Pirates as a throw in on a trade and pitching coach Rick Peterson has fixed him up. He is 6-4 with a 2.80 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP so far this season, As long as Perez keeps throwing strikes……the sky is the limit for him. Jorge Sosa has been a major surprise for the Mets. They signed him to a minor league contract in the off season and he didn’t make the team out of Spring Training. But he worked hard in AAA ball and earned a trip to the Mets. In his first six starts for the Mets, Sosa is 5-1 with a 3.22 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP so far this season. The Mets will go far in the post season if they can keep getting this kind of starting pitching and remember…..Pedro Martinez will be back in late July or early August.
